Many of the most downloaded and top-grossing apps in the United States are developed and maintained by foreign companies': FBI urges users not to download Chinese mobile apps over privacy risks
The FBI issued a public service announcement warning that mobile apps whose infrastructure is in China are subject to Chinese national security laws, which can compel access to user data. The Bureau highlighted risks such as apps harvesting address books when you invite friends, storing personal data in unclear locations, and sometimes including information‑stealing malware. While it did not explicitly tell Americans to avoid Chinese apps, the FBI advised users to: (1) review and disable unnecessary permissions on every app, especially access to contacts; (2) only download verified apps from official app stores; (3) regularly change passwords; (4) keep phones and apps updated; and (5) actually read terms of service and end‑user license agreements to understand where and how data is stored. The warning is especially relevant given how many top‑downloaded apps in the U.S. are developed by foreign companies, including in China and Hong Kong.
